Eating and Drinking
There is a huge choice of bars and restaurants in Nerja. Many of these are concentrated around the town centre and the Balcon de Europa however do not forget the East end of the resort where there is a large beach and more places to find refreshment!
Try these links to find information on the various bars and restaurants; Andalucia.com, Spain away and InterSol.
Things to see and do
Nerja has several beaches. The biggest beaches are either side of the town centre the East beach provides the largest expanse of sand but there are a couple of pretty coves directly under the town centre. If you have a car you should drive out of town East along the coast, parking up in the lay-bys on the cost road, and walk to down to the numerous quiet beaches that run under the cliffs. The more adventurous can take their car down any of dirt tracks which lead to some very quiet or even deserted beaches.
Just a few minutes out of town you
can visit Nerja's prehistoric caves complete with 20,000 year old cave paintings and a
huge cavern, time it right any you may be lucky enough to listen to one concerts
which are performed in the caverns.
A little further along the coast are two less well known Spanish towns that
are worth going to see.
Salobrena rises
like an island out of a sea of sugar cane, the white houses seem to be built
over one another, perching on on inland cliff, and topped by an Moorish Castle.
In front of the old town is a huge flat sandy beach lined with bars and
restaurants. Just before Salobrena you can make a detour to
Almunecar.
This is a charming town which lines a long beach, there is botanic garden, bird
park and water park as well as the usual amenities you would expect from a large
resort. However you would not expect the winding narrow streets of the old
town. Stop for refreshment in one of the basement bars lined with local
wine barrels and full of suspended hams.
Just behind Nerja is the mountainous national park of the Sierras de Almijara. The park is best accessed from one of the charming white washed mountain villages, or pueblo blancos, which border the park for example; Frigiliana or Competa. These villages are worth visiting in their own right as they are some of the prettiest villages in Andalucia.
Granada and
the Alhambra
are only 40 minutes from Nerja along good
motorways. The drive along the
E902 up from the coast towards Granada offers some fantastic views as you cut
through rocky hills and climb into the interior of Spain. On your way Granada
consider making a couple of detours. Firstly if you exit to the left into
the lecrin valley you can
drive a number of stunning villages which surround a lake. Due to the micro climate of this area it is sub-tropical and filled with lush groves of lemons, oranges and avocoados.
Alternatively head right onto the A343 towards the spa town of
Lanjaron
and the mountainous
Alpujarras region which offers access to the walking routes of the Southern
slopes of the Sierra Nevadas. If you have not got time to drive East into
the Alpujarras stop instead in
Niguelas which offers a small taste of this area but is just off the Granada mortoway.
If you continue round Granada you can ski from November to May on the North West slopes of Sierra Nevada national park.
